Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)

EMR is a special, minimally invasive procedure to remove precancerous or cancerous polyps, tumors, lesions or growths from your digestive tract, usually involving the mucosa. Sometimes during a colonoscopy or EGD, the doctor may find a polyp or lesion that cannot be removed at that time due to its size or location. Your physician may then refer you to our advanced endoscopists; Dr. Pandolfi and Dr. Dholakia for removal. During the procedure, while you are asleep, the physician will use an electrical snare to remove the polyp or lesion then they cauterize the area. If your physician took biopsies, they will be sent to the lab for further testing.

Why do I need this procedure?

This procedure is usually performed to remove the larger tumors, lesions, polyps or any abnormal tissue. It can be difficult to remove the lesions or polyps in one piece with EMR so ESD is also an option. Your physician will discuss what option will work best for you.
