G-POEM is a similar procedure to POEM. Your physician will insert a thin, flexible tube with camera attached, through your mouth into the esophagus and stomach. A small incision is made in the lining of the lower stomach by the small intestine. When the scope reaches the pylorus, which is the opening between the stomach and duodenum, your physician will cut the muscles that surround the pyloric sphincter to help them relax. This will help food move faster to the stomach. Gastroparesis symptoms include bloating, nausea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and vomiting. Over 70% of people who have had this procedure reported their gastroparesis symptoms decreased or went away.
What is the difference between POEM and G-POEM?
G-POEM was developed from POEM but G-POEM is performed to help people with chronic gastroparesis (where the stomach empties slowly) or have tried other treatments like medications with little or no success.
What causes gastroparesis?
The most common cause of gastroparesis is diabetes but other causes include nervous system disorders like Parkinson’s.
